briang,
throw the 18 cobra, it's not worth the time it'll take to fix it if it's
something serious.
most radios have a strong agc circuit in the receiver so very strong signals
wont damage the receiver. if you run 500 watts while talking to the guy in
the car ahead of you on the highway, you'll probably do some damage. i've
repaired a few galaxy radios that had been dumped on by a big signal of long
duration.
use a grounded antenna system if you can. magnet mount antennas are not a
good choice when running an amp. the valor dominator antennas are good for up
to about 1000 watts. if you want more power than that a nugitron or something
like a dave made or mr. coily antenna would be a good bet. just be sure you
don't buy a huge amp and then find out that you need a 250 amp alternator and
a 400 watt driver to push it. these big boy setups can get expensive so be
careful
