Are CB Shootouts an Extreme Sport?

I would say so. But most of all they are fun. The people there are great, the atmosphere is very relaxed considering it is a competition. Usually people enjoy themselves, and the competitors only fight with the microphone, and their mobile.

One thing you will see is a whole lot of antennas, huge alternators, and gargantuan amplifiers.

It takes a lot of engine RPM to get those alternators spinning fast enough to make the voltage to power the amplifiers to their max. I thought the sound was the neatest thing. Some of them sound like turbine engines (like on a helicopter), but the noise is just the serpentine belt and the alternators doing their thing.

Now you can hear them too, and see them (to an extent). The AVI movies below are taken from a recent shootout. If you are on a modem connection with a speed less then 56K it will take a while to download these movies, they are as small as I could get them without screwing up the quality of the video and audio entirely.

No names have been put to the movies to protect the competitors.

Enjoy!

It takes a lot of alternators, and here is a lot of them.

A look inside a big Dave Made mobile

AC Sky's the limit class, made the camera eject the tape from all the RF, but you can see some of it. Yes, all the Sky's the limit class made my camera eject the tape a few seconds after they key up, some as soon as they keyed up. Some of them you can actually hear the competitor shouting his name or numbers or whatever.

Another AC Sky's the limit, but this one only fuzzed up the camera, it didn't eject the tape, from the sounds, and the lines and distortion on the screen, you can definitely get a good idea of just how much RF is coming out of these things.

These were the ones to watch. These guys were running 5 or more Lexidyne Alternators (the kind on big RR Trains) and serious output. The one on the left was running some 70,000 watts. Had a 454 with a billet crankshaft, and nitrous oxide system to power those huge alternators under the hood. He had flames shooting out of his exhaust pipes during his last keydown at night when he hit the nitrous. Can you imagine hitting the Nitrous on a race car sitting still. It would result in massive destruction of the engine unless you have a serious load on it equivalent to moving the car down the road.

BTW, there are three AVI's here because AC Sky keys down multiple times to get the tubes fully warmed up.

The big Dave Made mobile causes the camera to eject the tape as soon as he keys.

This is the BIG FINALE, the 70,000 watt mobiles keys twice, then throws his belt. It was awesome before it threw the belt. This movie is a little higher quality than the previous ones, and a lot longer. It is a long download, but worth it.

Some big Dave Made Boxes. Picture only, but they appear in the 2nd AVI from top of this page.

I forgot to capture a still image of this one, it is pretty good, a big strapping mobile blows his belt.

Well, that's all for now, but hopefully that was enough to help you understand what these things are about if you have never been to a shootout before.
